XHTML5: The Zenith Of Markup Languages


In HTML5 developers have the freedom of flavor choice since HTML5 can be written either in HTML or in XML syntax (HTML5 and XHTML5, respectively). XHTML5 is the XML serialization of HTML5. The syntax is described by the HTML5 specification. However, one shouldn’t be confused since XHTML5 is as an application of XML. In other words, HTML5 and XHTML5 have identical vocabulary (the same set of elements and attributes) but different parsing rules. HTML5 documents might also be valid XML documents. This markup is often referred as a “polyglot” language. It is the overlap language of documents which are HTML5 and XML documents at the same time. HTML5 and XHTML5 serializations are cross-compatible. However, XHTML5 has a stricter syntax. Furthermore, some parts of XHTML5 such as processing instructions are not valid in HTML5.

Documents served as XML MIME type, such as application/xhtml+xml, are treated as XML documents by browsers, i.e., they are parsed by an XML processor. It is important to keep in mind that XML and HTML are processed differently. In fact, even minor syntax errors will prevent an XML document (or the ones that claimed to be XML) from being rendered correctly. In contrast, the errors of such documents would be ignored in the HTML syntax. A parsing error of XML documents can easily result in a “Yellow Screen of Death”.

Syntax And Restrictions

While most HTML elements could have always been used in the corresponding XHTML 1.0 flavor (HTML 4.01 Transitional elements in XHTML 1.0 Transitional, and HTML 4.01 Strict elements in XHTML 1.0 Strict), some elements introduced in the XHTML specifications were applied to XHTML exclusively. The difference between the HTML and XHTML vocabularies completely disappeared with the introduction of the latest markup versions, HTML5 and XHTML5, since HTML5 has exactly the same elements and attributes as XHTML5. However, XHTML5 is the zenith of markup languages. While some developers incorrectly consider XHTML as a too verbose language, it is not only stricter, but also more precise than HTML5. The major differences between HTML5 and XHTML5 can be summarized as follows.

  • Well-formedness is required. All elements must be closed. Nesting should be done in the proper order. Overlapping elements are incorrect in XHTML5.
  • Names are in lowercase. Since XML is case-sensitive, all XHTML5 element and attribute names must be in lowercase.
  • End tags are required. In HTML5, the end tag of several elements can be omitted, which is not allowed in XHTML5. All elements that are declared in the specification as empty elements (meta, link, br, hr, img, input) can be closed either by an end tag (similar to nonempty elements) or by the shorthand notation; in other words, a space and a slash character are inserted prior to the end of the declaration. Tags without a closing tag are also known as self-closing tags. In XHTML5, all unterminated elements are incorrect, including unterminated empty elements. The script element applies either to the full form (with the end tag) or to the shorthand notation, depending on the number of parameters and the behavior of the element.
  • Attribute values must be quoted and all attributes must include values in XHTML5. Unquoted attribute values are not allowed in XHTML5.
  • Attribute minimization is forbidden. Attribute-value pairs must be written in full. Attribute names such as compact and checked cannot be used in elements without specifying their values.
  • Whitespace handling is more advanced in XHTML5. Leading and trailing whitespace characters are stripped in XHTML5. In contrast to HTML5, whitespace characters in XHTML5 attribute values are normalized to single spaces. According to the XML specification, a single interword space (#x20) is appended to whitespace character sequences (#x20, #xD, #xA, #x9).
  • Script and style elements in XHTML5 are processed differently than in HTML5. While the content type of the script and style HTML elements is character DATA (CDATA), it is processed character DATA (#PCDATA) in XHTML5. The script and style elements are defined with #PCDATA content; in other words, < is handled as the beginning of markup code, while &lt; is recognized as an entity. XML processors recognize these CDATA sections. They are represented as nodes in the Document Object Model (DOM). Alternatively, external script files/styles sheet files can be used, eliminating the need for unescaped script or style contents.
  • Identifiers must be declared by the id attribute. XHTML documents must use the id attribute when defining fragment identifiers on markup elements.
  • Element prohibitions apply. In XHTML5, elements cannot be nested arbitrarily. Those who are not familiar with XHTML5 often commit nesting errors. The nesting rules should not be confused with overlapping, which is strictly forbidden in XHTML5. Unlike in HTML5, texts cannot be provided directly in the XHTML5 body without wrapping them in container elements (such as p).
  • Most special characters must be written directly in the markup instead of using character entities. Using characters directly with UTF-8 encoding is strongly recommended.
  • Dashes in comments are limited. Double dashes can be provided only at the beginning and end of XHTML comments.

Character Encoding Declarations

Character encoding of XHTML5 documents can be determined in many ways:

  • Using the HTTP header
  • Using in-document declarations
    • Pragma directive
    • Meta charset attribute
    • XML declaration

The older kind of declaration (meta http-equiv) should be used at the top of the head element. XHTML5 also provides a newly specified meta charset attribute (either of them could be used but only one at the same time). It should also be ensured that the whole declaration fits within the first 512 bytes of the document. This kind of meta element declaration cannot be used in the head element of XHTML5 documents if the character encoding is UTF-16. A byte-order mark should be present at the beginning of UTF-16 encoded files. The encoding declaration of XHTML documents depends on which MIME type they are served with. If they are served as text/html, the pragma directive can be used at the top of the head element. XHTML documents served as XML can use the encoding declaration of the XML declaration on the first line of the document. It should be ensured that there is no other content before the declaration (a byte-order mark can be used).

In spite of the advantages of XHTML5, HTML5 has become the recommended markup language due to its simplicity and suitability for everyday purposes. However, web designers should keep in mind that well-formedness, proper document structure, and correct element use should always be provided in the markup regardless of the serialization used even if the HTML parser is “more forgiving” than the XML parser.

Video Marketing – What YouTube Can Do For Your Website


One of my hobbies is to create short videos on the computer. For this I utilize software such as graphics editors and various animation and sound editing software. All of which I got for free off the internet.

Although this sounds complex, anybody can make a video of some kind even if all they have is a microphone and a webcam. You import various clips into a video editor such as Windows Movie Maker which comes with both XP and Vista, where you can perfect it, add titles and credits, narration etc.

About a year ago, I decided to start sharing them with the world. I started uploading these videos to and Google Video. I added my domain name in the credits and on the description, then my traffic increased a little bit. So I made a couple more, including one of which seems to be my crowning achievement. It is a 9 minute video HTML tutorial entitled How To Make A Web Page, it uses a little cartoon character to describe the process as I made a very simple web page with various screen shots and graphically designed backgrounds. As of the date of the writing of this article, this particular video has achieved over 2100 views and is being displayed on 4 other websites according to the statistics that the two sites provide. And best of all, I managed to advertise my own website simply by demonstrating how to add a hyperlink to a web page and using my own domain name to do so. It’s another great way to get your name out there.

Another benefit to this type of Video Marketing is that it can be utilized in a similar way to article marketing in that you can create content which can then be used for free on people’s websites, blogs and ezines. The better your video, the more likely it is to be used. But you don’t have to shoot for an Academy Award or anything, because all it takes is something somewhat interesting or pretty or foolish and somebody will watch it, email it to their friends, etc. Some people even take their favorite song and add photographs to do a video slideshow and upload them to these sites.

Both Google Video and YouTube will provide you with the codes to embed the videos into your website or blog as well as myspace, etc. They also provide you with the link to the video on their server and you are given the option to share them with others so that they may be displayed on their websites and blogs when you first upload them. You can even use many of the videos on YouTube and Google as content for your own site for free. They are also what is considered remotely hosted content, in that you don’t even have to upload huge video files to your web server. Pretty much anybody who has a blog now uses videos from YouTube as content, and a new trend has been moving towards the Video Blog. So in the future this will prove to be a very effective marketing technique.

All it takes is a little creativity, a little ingenuity and a link to your website in the description or your domain name in the credits.

Flash Support Finally Coming to iPhone? Skyfire Submits Browser App to Apple


My biggest complaint about the iPhone is it’s lack of flash support. If you’re wondering what Flash is, to put it simply, flash is streaming animation for web pages. Most of the websites on the World Wide Web today utilize flash. According to Adobe, who makes Adobe Flash Player, Flash is used on 99% of internet-enabled PCs. A survey done by the popular browser company, Opera, determined that between 30-40% out of over 3.5 million web pages tested contained Flash files. Either way you look at it, Flash is used on a lot of websites and any iPhone or iPad user knows the frustration of trying to access a website and instead only getting the blue cube of death.

Skyfire has been making mobile browsers for a years, with versions for Windows Mobile, Symbian S60, and Android handsets. According to Skyfire, their browser has been installed on almost a million Android devices in its first three months in the Android Market. My first experience with Skyfire was two years ago when I got to be a beta tester for Skyfire on Windows Mobile. Back then I had a Samsung Blackjack II with the mobile version of Internet Explorer which did not support flash. Skyfire greatly improved my browsing experience, enabling it to truly function as an uninhibited mobile web browser.

Despite continued pleas from iPhone users, Apple has been adamant in not allowing Flash to operate on their devices. Apple has instead decided to focus on HTML5, which has been claimed to be the future of streaming animation. The problem is, this isn’t the future yet, and a lot of sites are still heavily using Flash. So how does Skyfire think they can convince the stubborn Steve Jobs to approve this Flash-friendly app? Well, Skyfire claims the app has been developed in adherence with every guideline required by Apple regarding HTML5 video playback. How? Skyfire transcodes Flash video content to HTML5 on the fly, which means it can convert Flash content to HTML5 instantly. Not only that, the app compresses video data up to 75% which would take a huge data load off AT&T’s servers. Skyfire also has a feature known as “Explore”, which gathers relative content (news, images, etc) to whatever the user might be searching or reading about.

Personally, I’m tired of having to use work-arounds like logging into my PC remotely from my phone just to view a Flash website. If I could view Flash websites and videos on my iPhone, I would be less inclined to trade mine in for an Android phone when my contract is up. I hope Apple approves Skyfire, but I’m not holding my breath.

Formatting for Kindle – How to Convert a Document to HTML


So you’ve written a great article, a short story, a novel that’s had you drinking more coffee and sleeping less than when you were studying for your college finals, and now you can’t upload it to Kindle because it’s not in HTML format, don’t you just love it when that happens? The problem doesn’t come with the conversion itself, if you know how to do it, that is. But if you have no clue about how you’ll make this happen and you have to go trough a few more sleepless nights to get to do it, chances are that your sweet ol’ self is gonna turn into the Incredible Hulk after a short while. There are different ways to convert your documents to HTML. It will all depend on what format are you using to write in. So, let’s start with Word to HTML conversion, later I’ll discuss conversion from PDF format.

1. FIND YOUR DOCUMENT- from the File Menu you’ll see in Microsoft Word, select your saved document and open it, you can’t make a conversion with it closed even if you have selected it, so keep this in mind.

2. UPDATE YOUR DOCUMENT- not all the content that you have put on your file in Word format will appear in HTML. Numbers, and some images, are better left out. Once you have taken away this things, you need to save your document again.

3. CONVERT IT- When saving your document now, go to File, Click Save As and you’ll get the option to save as a Webpage or Save as HTML. You can select either one and click Save. Now, open a webpage and go to your documents file, select this document to open it, it will do so in HTML format.

For PDF formats, I suggest saving them into Word first and then converting them into HTML format, but you can also save these documents as HTML using Acrobat Professional.

Now That you have saved your document as HTML, you’ll need to clean up the code. The formatting in an HTML document is marked by tags, which are text enclosed in angle brackets, for example is a tag found in HTML formats. The language used in HTML is fairly simple once mastered. It would be a good idea to get a tutorial guide to help you learn HTML coding.

4. FORMATTING THE DOCUMENT- the Kindle does not support the use of margins in ways you may be accustomed to. I suggest you use a style sheet to format your book, and don’t forget to use CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) as much as you can. Some CSS rules, unfortunately, are not supported or only supported minimally in the Kindle: most of the have to do with margins and fonts. The best control over font sizes can be achieved using heading tags: (



, etc.). The and tags will allow you to adjust the size up or down a couple of sizes.

Use the custom tags to mark page breaks in the text. Try to include one in front of every chapter of your book.

Flex-Flash Vs HTML5 – An SEO Perspective


In my opinion, the iPad will change the way we do business and live our life. This is a bold statement but after picking one up at the store and seeing the potentially infinite possibilities, I think this statement is accurate. The anticipated additions to the OS (4.0) to allow multi-tasking could enhance this experience even greater. One element that has surfaced is the push by Apple to accelerate adoption of HTML5 for iPad friendly sites. This could be just what HTML5 needs to evolve.

After researching and using HTML5 in test environments, I wanted to focus on how HTML5 could allow rich experiences while maintaining high indexability.

HTML5 leverages API’s and scripts to create rich experiences often times performed by Flex/Flash or other RIA libraries. There are pro’s and con’s to using any of these libraries, but what makes the most sense from an SEO perspective? My vote is HTML5.

Although not as mature as other languages, the standard holds amazing promise for RIA’s and SEO. The current state of SEO and RIA’s is dismal at best. Silverlight initially held significant promise for SEO but alas after several implementations I have yet to see the power or impact of indexable XAML files. Flash and Flex are no better (if not considerably worse). When Flash 10 was released, a great deal of hype was placed on several SEO “enhancements” …again after trying to put these into practice it has been a lack luster impact.

HTML5 however is logically a better SEO companion. Why? It uses HTML. After a small implementation of HTML5, I was pleasantly surprised in the performance of the site and the ease of use of the code. HTML5 uses various API’s and scripts to perform activities but shares the load between the server and client side.

I think new initiatives that can start out fresh should seriously look at HTML5 as a pathway if they also value SEO.

A File Transfer Protocol or FTP is used to exchange files from your computer to a remote server. This is the one we use to connect on a LAN or to an Internet site.

Get busy.

Once you have the right tools, you will have to practice creating files using PHP. There are some very important stuff that you will need to learn, including basic mathematics and IF statements and using variables. you will have to go through these first before you can hope to build a reliable PHP file.

Once you know your way around these skills, you can then start learning about loops. Loops are just your basic true or false statements that will perform repetitive actions again and again until certain conditions are met. After mastering the loops, you can then learn how to write your very own functions. Once you have learned how to manipulate the codes to create your desired result, there is virtually no limit to what you can do.
